Today is exactly one year since I decided to share one photograph per day on Instagram. During this time I engaged with photography like never before. I got motivated to shoot more often and I explored new types of photography, I have learned a lot!
To the few of you who appreciated my pictures once in a while –or daily– you made every single one of my days this year. Thanks a lot for coming along.
I am going to take a break from sharing pictures. I have many projects that I would like to work on and I believe that taking the pressure off of putting a picture out daily will help me focus on achieving other goals and level up my photography. I hope to be back here soon with better images and better stories.

Easy shots 📷
It was easy to shoot almost a whole roll of film when I went to walk around the Mærsk Tower. Finding a good subject to photograph helps me feel that I am a good photographer. Even though I like these pictures and I want to feel confident with the camera, I feel that I need to improve a lot more, and shooting easy is of no use to grow as a photographer.

Copper facade 🏢
The facade of the Mærsk Tower is made of copper and it adapts to reflect the sunlight and keep the temperature inside the building low. The fact that is made of copper means that today it has a beautiful brown colour but perhaps in a couple of decades it will become green and get the colour of some of the old buildings in the city. I hope they do not do anything to stop corrosion from doing that.

The ramp 🚶
I do not know anything about architecture, but I have noticed that any successful project encourages the public to interact with it. The Mærsk Tower implements this concept using a ramp that connects two sides of the building. What is nice about this ramp is that it does not just go straight from A to B, it curves around in almost a silly way, but it gives people a very nice tour around the building.

University of Copenhagen 🏢
The Mærsk Tower is one of the most beautiful buildings in Copenhagen. It was built to host the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences of the University of Copenhagen. The building has won several prices in architecture and it is praised for their sustainable solutions to recycle water and cool down the air in the laboratories.

Drawing ✏️
Have you seen that guy who draws buildings with pencils (@ep.drawing)? I know it is quite pretentious but, this picture reminds me of his pieces of art – Though his drawings are much more compared to just pushing a button in a camera. For this picture of The Mærsk Tower in Copenhagen, the sky helped me a little bit to get the desired result. I like that it got it completely white in the exposed film and I did not have to edit the scanned film at all.

Architectural photography is one of the most beautiful forms of photography that I rarely practice. I feel that I do not have the right lens to photograph buildings, but I know well that it is just an excuse to justify the purchase of a tasty tilt-shift lens. Sometimes some buildings are just gorgeous and getting a nice picture of them is easy and rewarding.

St. Johannes Kirke ⛪
The city of Copenhagen was protected by fortification walls that were built along the lakes. Building outside of the walls was restricted, but after the British bombed the city in 1807, the city started to expand outside of the fortification, and one of the first neighbourhoods to develop was Nørrebro. St. John`s church was one of the first churches to be built here. Today it is still the largest church in Nørrebro.

Huset der regner ⛲
The water of the fountain "The house that rains" in Sankt Hans Torv runs without boundaries. It flows through the sculpture and onto the square, and that is because they were designed to complement each other. During the early `90s, the area was redesigned to improve the traffic conditions but it also ended up being one of the most lively squares of Copenhagen with lots of shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars around. Pretty awesome part of the city.

Dynamic range ☀️
Have I praised the dynamic range of medium format film enough, and the image quality I get with the Hasselblad? I do not think so. I think it is stunning to be able to get images like this without so strong lens flare (though I like lens flare) and without losing details in the highlights or the shadows.

Time to bike 🚴
I have lived in Copenhagen for many years and for a long time I did not own a bike. When I had a normal job in a company everything was just fine because my routine was very fixed. Now that I am a student again I have much more freedom to work in my PhD project anywhere I want, e.g. at home, a coffee house, the library, the woods... there is no limit! But not having a bike has a big impact on the efficiency to get to those places. I think it is time to find a bike again!

Around the lakes 🏙️
A walk around the lakes is good no matter the time of the year. However, I prefer the colder seasons because right now the conditions are perfect for living organisms like insects to last long enough near trees in the shadow, and sometimes flies get stuck in my beard. Though every time I am nearby the lakes I like stopping very quickly and snap one or two photos for the road.

Tempting times 😈
These days new cameras are being announced and it is very tempting to reconsider the fundamental hierarchy of needs and lower the expectations about what to eat in exchange for a high-resolution full-frame camera. But! When I get across one of my medium format scans the whole argument pitched by camera companies falls apart. For much less money, I am getting far more megapixels with much better dynamic range, better optics, and a style that makes me look more hipster.

The branches and the angel 😱
I love the contrast and sharpness of this picture. Nothing much is happening and it does not portray a fancy subject but this area is very special for me because it feels like home. I also like how the branches on the left raise in the sky like vines wanting to overtake the buildings on the right. I imagine a big shadow evil fighting against the white angel on the roof of the church... ahem, probably I am watching too much TV.

Shooting from the hip 📸
The Hasselblad 503CW is a single-lens-reflex camera which means it has a mirror that projects the image onto a viewfinder to compose and focus the image. The viewfinder is called waist-level-viewfinder, which means that the camera does not need to be brought to the face to shoot, but it can stay at a comfortable level around the waist or chest. I am so blind that I need to look closely into the viewfinder anyway, and when I try to shoot from the hip, I can easily miss focus because it is impossible to see the image farther than 30cm. I wish I was not so blind, but I probably should learn other ways to focus too.

Sustainable tree 🌲
I am not sure if this was a tree that naturally grew here or if it was a leftover from Christmas and somebody dumped it graciously. In any case, when I came to Denmark it caught my attention the tradition of getting natural trees, as opposed to plastic ones, to celebrate Christmas. I had the impression that being able to reuse plastic tress would compensate for the impact of producing them. As far as I can remember my parents always used the same ugly bushy tree and did not have to cut one every year. But of course, in a country like Denmark, it can be more sustainable to have a controlled industry growing trees that satisfies the local demand.

A house in the woods 🏡
Landscapes like this are a bit irresistible for me. Every time I photograph places of this sort I think that someday I will get a house in the woods, where it is quiet and I would have the chance to photograph nature more. A bit of an ambitious dream, but it is just that, a dream.

The shed will be demolished 🏠
I have passed by this shed several times and I have always thought that it looks amazing in the landscape. One day I was taking a photo of it and a person passed by and thanked me for it, because the shed is going to be demolished and he liked the way it looked, so at least there would be a nice photo of it. That was one of the few times I felt that photography is not a waste of time. Some times I wish I could do more than just filling this timeline. I wish it was a way of life, a way into life.
